Digital communication modes are present in operations for many amateur radio station. Many years ago all the digital operator had to get themselves a device which received the signal to read it on the screen of their old computer, often the device decoded only one single mode. The richest could get PK-232, KPC3 and the beautiful MFJ-1278, they could copy RTTY, AMTOR and even CW. The digital modes today are using the soundcard of your computer.
 
No more TNC but an interface, it send the information from the software in computer to your radio, this mean, the electricity in your computer can read only logical signals one or zero (+5v./0v). But the radio works with 12 v. then how will they communicate, the answer is by the com port of your computer named COM1, it's allows you to connect the radio via the mode RS-232.
